面纱
《面纱》The painted veil－－根据毛姆的同名小说改变的电影。《面纱》的书名出自雪莱的十四行诗：
别揭开这幅彩幕(painted veil)
它被活人称为生活
虽然上面所绘的图景显得很不真实
只不过是以随随便便涂刷的彩色
来摹拟我们愿信以为真的一切东西
1920年代大英帝国的中产阶级少女，在被家人认为应该结婚的时候，遇到了一个条件很不错的男医生(确切地说，一个为政府实验室工作的生物学家，当然他确实是医学博士），于是结婚了来到上海。可是医生有些古板和不善于表达感情，再加上似乎不热衷于床第之事（啊我没看过小说，从电影的暗示中猜的，猜错了表骂我），女人一直对他没法建立感情。之后为言辞犀利的英国副领事吸引，红杏出墙。
不料医生的智商是不可低估的，早就洞悉了一切。正巧长江上游梅潭府爆发霍乱，医生要求前往支援。他给女人两个选择：和他一起去疫区，或者离婚。女人在副领事那里碰了钉子，只好前往上面图中这个风光秀丽瘟疫盛行的地方。
这些故事应了张爱玲的一句话："生在这世上, 没有一样感情不是千疮百孔的 "。也许太绝对了一点，但用在这个故事里恰如其份。在梅潭府的时间里，女人为她丈夫所感动，两个人都有所改变，开始有了爱的感觉。－－这个情节有点像张爱玲的《红玫瑰与白玫瑰倾城之恋》，都是在极端的外部条件下（霍乱，战争），人们就像憋在坛子里缺乏氧气的的蔬菜和汤渍，不得不互相容忍，最后成了好吃的泡菜。不管怎么说，是一部不错的爱情片，好就好在它如桂林山水，细水深流，不起大波澜而冲突惊心。
网上有人说这部片子有点偏颇，把中国说得太落后了一点。其实医生也说了："这些修女有时候也从年青的父母那里买来孩子，只是为了多一个天主教徒。"－－当然，这些其实都只是背景，把中国换成苏丹，梅潭府换成达尔富尔，我看也没什么区别。
♬ 最后，片尾曲法语歌《À La Claire Fontaine》（At the clear fountain, 在清澈的泉水边)，是一首颇有历史的法国民歌，大约出现于17世纪初。
