Learning Perl

I am never a computer language zealot. I learned Basic, FORTRAN, Pascal, C/C++ in college and realized that actually all languages are similar. You can driver a rocket-engine car (like Ada) to Rome, you may also driver a diesel-engine car (like C) to Rome, the difference is what you mean to pay.

Since most of my job can be done with C/C++, I never plan to learn other computer languages except the job requires, in any way I can learn it very quickly since languages are similar. However, each of my jobs endows me opportunity to learn a new computer language.

The first job, brings LabVIEW to me. It is a graphic language and looks like circuit diagram. Electronics engineers like the languages and I have to provide supporting toolkit of my product in LabVIEW. The second job asked me grasp ladder language, which is also a graphic language and it’s IEC standard in automation industry. I never thought it’s a convenient language and I really adore those guy writing millions lines of ladder for automobile product lines.

It is my third job now and I have to learn Perl for some of my job will be performed by Perl on Linux. I am pleased to start working on that because my current weblog, Moval Type (MT) is using Perl as CGI. I would have more understanding of my weblog, by refining my daily job, that’s buy one get one trick.

To me, Perl is extremely like Basic, the advantage is it introduced powerful operations for string, array, pattern and files. The slogan of Perl is “Perl can do things in different ways”, I am serching in those ways now……
